The White-bellied Herons (Ardea insignis) occur naturally in East Himalayan foothills, where it inhabits wetland areas of tropical and subtropical forests in North East India and Burma.

Their chest and foreneck are grey. The abdomen is white. They have dark grey upper wings and white underwing feathers.

When breeding, they have greyish-white name plumes and elongated grey chest feathers with white centers.
