Rusty Whistlers (Pachycephala hyperythra)

The Rusty Whistlers (Pachycephala hyperythra) – also known as Bornean Mountain Whistlers, Brownish Whistlers, Red-bellied Robin Whistlers, or Rufous-breasted Whistlers – occur naturally in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea; where they inhabit subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

Subspecies of Rusty Whistlers and Distribution:

  • Pachycephala hyperythra hyperythra (Salvadori, 1876) – Nominate Form
    • Inhabit the mountains of northwestern and western New Guinea; specifically Vogelkop, Onin Peninsula, Wandammen, and Weyland Mountains. Also found in eastern-central New Guinea – the headwaters of the Fly River, including the upper Palmer River and Ok Tedi areas.
  • Pachycephala hyperythra sepikiana (Stresemann, 1921)
    • Found in the Sepik mountains, mountains south of the Mamberano River and North Coastal Range, in northern New Guinea.
  • Pachycephala hyperythra reichenowi (Rothschild and E. J. O. Hartert, 1911)
    • Found in the Huon Peninsula, specifically the Saruwaged mountains in northeastern New Guinea.
  • Pachycephala hyperythra salvadorii (Rothschild, 1897)
    • Occurs naturally in the mounts of southeastern New Guinea (east of Lake Kutubu and Mountain Bosavi).
